If you find conventional bright white French nails a little "too much," or too extreme, you can still get a semi-French look if you tone it down with acrylics, like this lady did.

The tips look clean and she has very elegant nails that look great with pearls. You could of course get the same look with natural nails and the right light white or even semi-sheer nail color.
