If you will be wearing nice jewelry, boost the glitz
and glamour by dressing up your lips and fingertips with
this pretty sparkling lipgloss and nail polish.
Pink nails would also look nice if you have a white
dress, or any pastel-colored prom gown. Of course there
are many other nail colors you can choose that match or
compliment your prom dress, or show high contrast (e.g.,
red and white).
The three most popular nail colors are red, pink and
white. Red is a good evening color, but does not work
perfectly with every prom dress. White tips, also called
"French nails" or a "French manicure,"
with pink and white nail polish, look elegant and
complement virtually every dress.
Glamorous Classic French Manicure
French manicure for prom is now and has always been a
great choice. You'll see so many girls with it in print
ads for prom dresses in all the prom magazines. It looks
pretty, sophisticated, and posh.

If you usually don't bother to color your nails, but
want to look more polished for your prom, don't expect to
do a perfect french manicure on your first attempt. It
can take a while to get it right every time; you'll want
to practice with guides first.
Since most nail salons specialize in french manicures,
because they are the most requested nail style, and the
cost is typically not very high, you might want to get
your nails done by a pro for prom.
Long French Manicure
Your natural nails don't have to be very long for a
french manicure to look nice; in fact, 1/4" long
tips can look perfect. Still, extra length is a beauty
ideal for many women, be it long legs, longer lashes,
longer hair, or nails with added length.
If you want long nails for prom, and don't already
have them long, acrylic nails could be the solution. But
you could get the extra glamour and also find a new
little problem.
Sara, 16, from Oakland, California, shared her prom
nail experience with YM Prom magazine.
"I got long acrylic nails for prom and though
they made it hard to maneuver things, my friends said
they looked glamorous, and I kept them on.
"Problem: Our dinner was Chinese food. I ate with
my chopsticks, but I couldn't hold anything very well.
When I tried to pick up a sizzling dumpling, it popped
out of my sticks and flew directly onto the shirt of the
guy sitting across from me, leaving a greasy stain all
the way down his front!"
French Pedicure for Prom
The completely coordinated French look has your
fingernails and toenails all glammed up.

If you're going to wear open heels to prom, like so
many other girls, a French pedicure looks pretty. It's
the simplest way to add style and give your feet a clean
look. Your toes will look great with any prom shoe color--gold,
silver, red--anything.
French Manicure with Nail Art
A popular variation of the french manicure has nail
art. Brides love this!

But nail art on just one nail shows a touch of finesse,
too, like understated elegance.

Nail Art
Decal application can be very tricky to get right,
especially if you want all your digits enhanced. If you
don't have time or experience, leave it to a pro--just
call the salon ahead of time to ask about their nail art
experience and if they have the required decals on hand.
Tough as Nails
When you go to the trouble of getting your nails done
right, you want them to stay perfect, avoiding any last-minute
nail problem just before prom starts, so you could use an
extra layer or two of clear topcoat to protect your
manicure from chipping. The best topcoat is Seche Vite,
many women find. It has the right formula to make your
nails shiny and strong.

Colored French Nails
Maybe a french manicure is too traditional for you,
and you want something a little different. Consider a
creative variation, such as a substitute color for white
like red. Or the inverse, still keeping the white tips,
but add red where there is usually pink.

Red
Chevron French Manicure
There are two main french manicure styles, round,
which is most common, and angled, like in the above
picture, which is called "Chevron." Both are
very attractive.
Bright Nail Tips
You could even try two colors, like red and gold, with
the gold a thin line below red tips--this was Anna Nicole
Smith's signature nail style.
Because only part of the nail is colored, you can use
bright colors, like fuchsia; fuchsia and a silver lining
of glitter looks very glam.

Hot Tip
OPI has a wonderful wide selection of soft
pink and creamy shades of nail polish that look great
for prom nails. The collection is called "Princess
Charming Softshades." These are a set of
ultrafeminine gentle romantic nail colors.
Romantic Nails
There is another OPI series for brides which would
make good prom choices, too, called "Sheer Romance
Bridal Collection."

OPI Sheer Romance
A great nail color to go with a satin red prom dress--either
completely satin, or with a satin band or bow--is Sally
Hansen Endless Claret nail polish. This is a shimmery red
(slightly blueish) that looks amazing.

Gold and Silver
Gold nail polish is not too common at any time or on
any occasion, but it could work for prom, depending on
your total look. Silver, though, is a great choice for
prom, especially if you have silver prom shoes or jewelry.
It's very feminine. Even more femme is pearly nail color.
Girls in pearls and pearl nail polish look extremely
pretty. It's just such a great "sweet 16" look.
Glitter Top Coat
If gold alone is too much for you, a less extreme gold
addition is the popular gold glitter, a great idea for
prom. Gold glitter is something you can add on top of any
other color, and since it's sheer, it doesn't interfere
with it, just adds some shine and sparkle. The better
glitters not only add the glitz, they also make your
manicure last longer, like a good top coat.
Prom Night Nail Polish
Creative Nail, a major nail polish company, offers one
sexy pink nail lacquer called "Prom Night."

Refined Elegance

Nail color can complement any dress or prom look, but
you can look just as refined with well-manicured
fingernails without any color. This refined look shown
here is a perfect example. It's clean, simply elegant,
and glamorizes any outfit and all accessories.

Select Salon
Still not sure what nail color or style you want for
prom? Your local nail salon can provide original ideas
for fun, long-lasting, cute, sexy, elegant creative nail
perfection. Tell them what all you'll be wearing--dress,
shoes, jewelry, etc.--and see what they suggest.
Beauty salons or spas can offer prom packages like
they do for weddings. So check your local options and
bring your perfect shade of nail color when you go to get
your hair and nails done. If you're not a salon regular,
ask someone who is, to make sure you go to a reliable,
high-quality nail salon.
