America Ferrera
in gray Monique Lhuillier formal dress

This
is kind of a cute plus-size formal gown, but the
color is just so sober. Gray? On the red carpet?
For a special celebration like the SAG Awards?
And only gray? A full block color that is so
conservative really needs another color to liven
it up. A red band or flashy stole, for example.
Even bright yellow. And a different fabric,
perhaps satin, to offset the serious color.
A long dress in only one muted color of this
fabric doesn't suit many young women. If it were
all satin, it might work. Like a charcoal evening
dress. But this one kind of drags you down.

| America has worn
much brighter and more exciting gown colors on
the red carpet, including royal blue, hunter
green, etc. You might like the style and
structure of this dress by Monique Lhuillier, but
you also might prefer it in another color. It
would look very pretty for a plus-size girl if it
were, for example, red, yellow, or even black--anything
but gray!
Here's an example of how you can make an
evening dress in one conservative color look
right. Christina Applegate's evening look uses
two colors instead of one, and her dress has more
than one fabric.

Notice how when you wear a full-length gown
like America, you lose the opportunity to balance
out a two-color look because your shoes aren't
visible.
